Guangzhou periodeLeiden period The Rachel Series

Rachel I Rachel II The Rachel series consists of a total of seven paintings. Five of them featured in Randolf’s first exhibition in China at the Wuxi Painting & Calligraphy Academy in December 1998. These paintings show a remarkable structure and composition. Although the canvas and the paint itself are extremely smooth, they appear to be very lively. This effect is caused in the first layers of paint where paint is removed instead of added. The top layers are very transparent. The composition in the first two paintings is unusual because the background is very small and almost centered in the middle of the painting. With the use of colors in the same range, the artist is aiming to make a peaceful painting that becomes more appreciated the longer you look at it.
